Carla Korbes and Lucien Postelwaite of Pacific Northwest Ballet in Romeo et Julliette, 2010.  Carla is one dancer that BREATHES emotion when she dances.
NOTE - I am personally sick of seeing all of these “trick” ballet pics.  Ok so there is a gorgeous arch. Gorgeous foot.  Wow nice extention.  But really people, half the dancers that are being posted have NOTHING “upstairs”.  No emotion, no passion.  I am a patron, a reviewer, a dance photographer and I must say, i am sick of the dancers I see that don’t sell it.  THey have amazing technique but i dont see that they LOVE it.
Peter Boal - the Artistic director of PNB said in a documentary called Dancing Across Borders, that “You can have the arch and the extention, but its rare you come across someone that captures you…with a type of magic, sometimes I call it Fairy Dust…”  We recently watched the PNB students do their end of year performance, and I was so sad at the amount of blank, stone cold faces I saw up on stage.
In each level above level 5’s - I could maybe pick out 2 kids in each group, that danced from their heart and had the “complete” package.  They SOLD it.  I saw other kids with these AMAZING facilities who literally looked like they didnt give a rats ass and would rather be hanging with their friends.  Its almost like they were born with this amazing ability - but because their extention was perfect, their feet were amazing etc - they didnt have to WORK for it, so they didnt care.
To all of you dancers on Tumblr that read this - do me and every other paying patron and lover of dance a favor.  Stop paying so much attention on trying to get PERFECT technique, and get lost in the music.  Get lost in your dance.  Shut your eyes and show us what it means to you without words.
Dance from your heart, breathe your emotions - and you will radiate beauty!
